Hand-Painted Fine Art Mural: "Shimmering Shallows" in Mackenzie Lake, Calgary
Mural Project Details
This residential mural was completed for Simon & Deepa in Calgary, Alberta at their Mackenzie Lake private residence.
Simon & Deepa wanted to transform their home's entryway. They were looking for a custom mural to turn a massive, stark, and dominant grey staircase wall into a warm, meditative focal point that introduces organic flow, natural light, and deeply personal, quiet symbolism.
Project Size: 515.6 sq. ft.
Timeline: February 2, 2026 – April 20, 2026
Our Collaborative Process
To bring Shimmering Shallows mural to life, we guided Simon and Deepa through our signature collaborative process from February to late April. We began with a deep-dive discovery phase (Riff) to align on their aesthetic goals and spatial constraints, followed by creative mood-boarding and concept exploration (Roam) to narrow down the design directions.
Once we finalized and locked in the custom design (Refine), we transitioned to the physical space in late March, coordinating and constructing a heavy-duty scaffolding platform over the stairs (Realize: Site Prep) before executing the multi-week, highly detailed painting and gold-leaf application (Realize: Paint). We wrapped up in mid-April with a personal walkthrough and final sign-off (Reflect), celebrating a beautiful transformation.
Project Challenges
Site Challenges
The Height & Angles: Painting a massive wall rising 20 feet above a staircase presented significant physical challenges. The steep, awkward angles of the stairs made standard ladder work unsafe and impractical for detailed painting.

Logistics & Safety: During the Site Prep week, we coordinated a professional scaffolding team to build a solid, custom platform directly over the stairs. This created a temporary "floor" for our safety during the multi-week painting phase, though a ladder was still required to squeeze into the tightest, highest corners.

Design Challenges
The Subtle Balance: The creative brief demanded an incredibly fine line between too simple and too busy. While initial concepts explored incorporating structured geometric patterns, these ideas were ultimately excluded to ensure the final piece remained entirely organic, clean, and timeless.

Suggestive Depth over Decoration: Above all, Simon and Deepa did not want a painting that was merely decorative or quickly decipherable. They wanted a highly suggestive, open-ended visual landscape, an atmospheric piece that acts as a quiet mirror, where you can easily get lost in the movement of the lines and ultimately find yourself grounded in the calm of the home.

Color Transition: We needed to entirely neutralize the cold, dominant grey of the existing space. The challenge was introducing a primary palette of cool blues and greens (reflecting the surrounding Calgary environment) while seamlessly blending in restrained, warm undertones and gold highlights to invite warmth without relying on high-contrast, jarring saturated colors.

The Solution
The Artistic Approach
Wallpaper could never. Shimmering Shallows is a stunning, semi-abstract mural that brings sweeping movement, rich texture, and a touch of gold leaf to a towering, transitional space. The artwork was designed to physically collaborate with its environment: natural light reflecting off the lake outside travels through the window and dances across the hand-applied gold on the wall, making it feel as if the lake itself has stepped inside.

By leaning into pure, fluid abstraction rather than literal patterns, the mural acts as a suggestive, evolving sanctuary. Every soft gradient invites the viewer to pause; it is a space designed for you to get lost in the intricate, water-like flow, only to find yourself again in its quiet, restorative presence. The result is a timeless, meditative piece that feels completely native to the home's architecture and reveals new layers of depth the longer you look at it.
The Production Process
Executing this vision safely and flawlessly required equal parts tech-forward engineering and precise hand-artistry. After preparing the 20-foot wall and laying down a full coat of our custom-blended background color, we utilized The Meta Oculus Virtual Reality (VR) to trace our main composition lines onto the wall with a pencil. This cutting-edge step allowed us to scale the organic flow of the design perfectly to the towering architecture before picking up a brush.

From there, we painstakingly built up depth by hand-mixing and layering paints with contrasting sheens, blending flat, gloss, and metallic finishes together. This variation in luster, topped with delicate gold leaf accents, created a rich, multi-dimensional surface that directly reacts to the natural light coming off the lake, shifting beautifully from sunrise to sunset.

Impact & Results
The transformation of the Mackenzie Lake residence is striking. What was once a cold, empty transition zone is now the emotional heart of the home. By replacing the dominant grey with rich, organic warmth, the entire entryway feels instantly welcoming and grounded. Simon, Deepa, and their guests now find themselves pausing on the landing just to sit with the artwork—achieving the ultimate goal of turning a pass-through hallway into a destination of quiet pause and reflection where the lake and the home become one.
