Crescent Heights High School Mural
Mural Project Details
This indoor mural collaboration was completed for the Crescent Heights High School in Calgary, Alberta in their Spanish Immersion wing of the school.
As part of their Spanish immersion program, they were looking for a way for students to leave their mark and that the following graduating class could contribute to as a legacy contribution.
Timeline for project: Start date (Feb 13, 2024 > April 6 2024)
PROJECT CHALLENGES
Site challenges: The biggest challenge was keeping the mural art project within our timeline when we could only be onsite for max 3 hrs per day, when the students were in their Spanish immersion classes. This required everyone who was participating in the mural creation to be very efficient with our time.
Some of the teachers who were initially going to be involved in the project, were not available and so some of the previous planning were subject to a little improvisation to accommodate the students and substitute teachers.
Design challenges: The majority of students did not draw or paint in their free time and so their understanding of application was minimal.
THE SOLUTION
A list of roles was created to allow students who didn’t want to paint to still contribute meaningfully to the project. The mural design was kept simple and easy to transfer onto the wall while ensuring it remained visually engaging and nuanced. A projector was used to accurately project the design onto the wall for painting.
IMPACT & RESULTS
The hallway became a focal point for that area of the school. Teachers and students slowed down to look at the art installation and felt inspired as they passed through. The students who participated, enjoyed the process, even requesting additional time to come and help us complete the project.
