Mural Project Details

This project was completed for Frida’s Coffee Home in Calgary, Alberta at their West Village Tower location. Founded by Frida Murillo and Zaheen Hamidan, the café aims to create a welcoming space offering authentic Mexican hospitality, with a vision of becoming the first internationally recognized Mexican coffee brand.

The mural was designed to reflect the charm and cultural significance of San Miguel de Allende, a town known for its colonial architecture and colourful facades.

Timeline for project:

Start date: July, 29, 2024 > Oct 04, 2024

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Site challenges: This project presented some logistical hurdles. The wall designated for the mural was relatively small, limiting the canvas size. The café was still undergoing renovations, meaning our time on-site was shared with other contractors needing to do their part. The absence of air conditioning in the space caused the paints to dry very quickly, which required constant adjustments to our technique to maintain the mural's vibrancy.

Design challenges: Frida’s Coffee Home aimed for a design that was both unique and authentically represented their brand. The challenge was to not only evoke the spirit of a Mexican town but to specifically capture the essence of San Miguel de Allende.

THE SOLUTION

Collaborating closely with Frida and Zaheen, we undertook extensive research and produced multiple design iterations, honing the mural to reflect a harmonious blend of Mexican tradition and innovation. This process involved careful attention to the unique architectural details of San Miguel de Allende while navigating the limitations of space and budget. Our objective was to find an ideal balance between intricate detail and practical feasibility throughout the design process.

IMPACT & RESULTS

The mural grounds café’s atmosphere, creating a unique focal point that merges the warmth of Mexican culture with Calgary’s urban landscape. We hope it will resonate with the community, enhancing brand recognition and attracting foot traffic once Frida’s Coffee Home opens its doors.

FROM THE CLIENT

“The process was amazing, from the initial concepts you sent to transforming that grey space into a picture of Mexico. Maya and David understood our vision for the coffee house and transformed it into a beautiful space. As both a client and a first-time viewer of the mural, I find the creativity truly inspiring. ” - Frida & Zaheen
